Spy Emerson – Books From the Underground Public Library

Opening Friday, January 7, 2011, 6:30 – 9:30 pm

DEBATE Thursday, January 13, 2011, 7:30 – 9:30 pm

Conceptual artist Spy Emerson is banging the chaos drum (again), and calling out to (all) people who have opinions about Art, to come DEBATE!! The Jellyfish Gallery presents “Books from The Underground Public Library”; a print exhibition of Emerson’s collage works January 8th -28th, 2010.  An open debate, “Is this Sexist”, will be held at the gallery, in direct response to the recent controversy over her images in Berkeley, with guest speakers Dottie Lux of RedHots Burlesque, and “Kelley” The Singing Cowboy. Dr. Hal Robins, Church of the SubGenius, will moderate the event.

The images on display are a collage medium combining discarded/outdated pornographic images, with pictures of food from grocery-store circulars and Good Housekeeping magazines. This body of work, named “EAT IT”, creates a visual comparison of food and sex, and how both are consumed. In one image, a woman holds a cherry over her previously exposed genitals, showing nothing but legs. In another image, a woman gluttonously devours mayonnaise from the jar, exposing her own body in the process. Both women are projecting beacons of sexuality; each relates a different feeling about consumption with both women being equally in control.
